This book brings together more than four decades of spiritual poems that have come through me.
It’s been a 2-year journey collecting, organizing, and mixing recent and older work. The collection is not chronologically organized as is traditionally done. The poems are organized into 7 sections by topic, with each section taking its name from the core poem for that section.
The original title of the book was going to be “a letter in a bottle” because I had–perhaps grandiose–visions of the book washing up on some shore (on perhaps another planet) after I’m gone and after the earth is toast. But after rereading the earlier poems and after the poem “the light box” came through me, I realized that hope is really all that we have left. As Valerie Kaur would say, “this current darkness is that of the womb and not the tomb.”
There is a quickening in this earth. We all feel it–even the upholders of the crumbling regime of white supremacy. This is the light that shines through these poems.
